American Babies Named in Realtime
Have you ever wanted to know what it's like to watch all the babies in all the hospital wings around the country being born?
Here at the Baby Name Institute we tried to create that. Unfortunately, we don't get to see the beautiful babies come into existence. We don't even get to see the joy on the parents' faces. Instead, the widget above is more like a recreation of all the birth certificates being filled out in realtime all around the country.
For the "real time" simulation we are assuming 2017 data is approximately the same as current data. The Social Security Administration states that in 2017 there were 3,838,189 babies born in America. In 2017 there were 31,536,000 seconds. That means one baby is born once every 8.2 seconds. If you watch above a new name will appear about once every eight seconds, though sometimes due to random chance it could be much longer or shorter. The names outputted are based on the popularity of actual names, as seen in the 2017 data. Every time you refresh the page you will get a new name order, although sadly the names collected at the bottom will be erased.
